I just tried a game using Mame055 and it was frameskipping at 8 or 9 in order to achieve 100% speed making the game crap to play - managed 155k which I guess wasn't bad for my first attempt.

Given this was fixed in m34beta would m35tg3b (Dos) be acceptable to use so that I get full speed without frameskipping or should I wait until I can afford a new computer before taking a crack at this game again?

yes, but you will get 4 ships on versions before mame60 or somewhere, so you must just die on your last ship with m35tg3. just check the special rules :p
