basically it was recorded with out sound to make sure the speed was kept above 95%, alpha got 96% recorded speed. This recording also playsback with sound so you don't need to in order to play it back. If you want to turn off sound (for recording or playing back) you can either use -nosound for command line mame.exe or in the mamegui.exe (or mame32): right click on the games' properties, go to the Sound Tab, then turn off "Enable sound and sound CPUs" (or something similar.)

It should be noted that more recent MAME versions no longer disable emulated sound hardware when sound is disabled.
Bad news is that -nosound will have no impact on speed. Good news, is that it doesn't affect playback. You shouldn't have any problems playing it back either with or without sound.
