Test round begins... right now. With Contra.

Post by gameboy9 »

OK, you know the rules... no pushing, no shoving, no hooking, no fighting... oh wait a minute. You have to fight... or you're not going to finish this game anytime soon.

Our test round is Contra... it starts right now.

Lap 1 ends January 4 at 2359 GMT
Lap 2 ends January 6 at 2359 GMT
Lap 3 ends January 8 at 2359 GMT
Lap 4 ends January 10 at 2359 GMT
Lap 5 ends January 12 at 2359 GMT... unless rule 8 takes effect...

Just place your scores as attachments here. I'm guessing we can have attachments less than 50K... have fun yall.

Even though I can't participate since I only have a mac, I am wondering what these "laps" are all about.

I reviewed your rules and there is no mention of laps at all and what they mean as far as the contest etc.

doH, my bad. I had only seen the 8 rules. I didn't notice that thread that posted more...as obvious as it is.

I figured the rules would just be edited to be updated all in 1 place versus revised in pieces in other threads. That gets confusing.

Well, have fun guys.

CONTRA in 7:08

Post by MrBunny »

Was there gonna be time-penalties for using continues or deaths?

Timed at 7:08 from insert coin to last boss blown up. Then I let the credits roll.

BTW... when we play in the series, WolfMAMEPlus 78 will be required. (but NOT in this test round, since I didn't mention a version, and the penalty of changing the rules is death last I checked ;) )

And... I wish there was a Macintosh version of that... frankly... but that's just my honest opinion. :)

You can see I was slow on a few parts, and I always mess up the last level :? Feel free to use any of my horrible tactics. :)

I got a time of 5min 39.2 sec (from inserting credit to the second I blew up the boss). How are you getting the time and frames, gameboy9? I mean, where and how do you start counting and ending both.

I write down what frame you gain control (one frame before the player lands on the ground, I believe), then write down the first frame the final boss blows up, then figure out the difference, then divide by 60 (frames / second for Contra), and that's how I get the final time.

Thank you Barry for programming a frame counter. :)

Oops! The player gains control as soon as the player shows up on the screen... the times have been adjusted. Sorry about that. :(

Oh, come on, just because you can't complete the game right now doesn't mean you can't be in on this. I have never until this competition played arcade (or NES) Contra in my life. I certainly didn't make it through the game on my first few tries on a single credit. :) I played it until I figured out how everything worked, then finally beat it on a single credit. Then I continued to break it down by playing each part until I could get through each of them without dying, and going as fast as the game allows. The problem I have right now is just putting that all together (I can do it by section, but it isn't as easy for some reason when you do it all at once).

Don't give up Pete. :)

Heh. Probably I count incorrect my score. 5:47. My frames are below 20000.
