2011 Time Trials - Grand Final - Galaxian

Post by gameboy9 »

That's right... we go super old school for the grand final, Galaxian! Although this game was featured in John Cunningham's Golden Era Game Of The Week in June of 2006, this has never been in an offical MARP tournament....... until today! This, obviously, is a big time classic, so I have a feeling that this game is going to be the best game I choose for this tournament. Since this is the grand final and that this game will decide it all, every single shot you make counts! Don't go for style points, a.k.a. the 800 point bonus, the only thing you need to worry about is killing aliens.
Within your time limit, clear as many stages as possible, there's no minimum, and no maximum. The clock starts when your first ship appears on the screen. If you don't clear the stage either by the end of your time limit or by reaching game over, count the number of aliens remaining before the time ran out and subtract from 48, which is the maximum number of aliens in each round. Yes, I recognize that there are usually 46 aliens in a round, but sometimes there are a couple carry overs if you don't kill them from the previous round.
Don't be afraid to keep going a few seconds after your time limit expires, you don't want to end your recording before you actually would have run out of time. This is the ultimate challenge. Most stages and aliens killed wins the time trial. Good luck to each and every one of you!

GAME: Galaxian (Namco set 1) (1979)

T.T
You want me to die...

Okay, I pre-announce my defeat #-o

[but... okay, this should be considered as a shoot - but it's also golden era, and we did have already a golden era game...
Is it fine too? I ask it as OPINION and to everyone of course
For me the choice is... quite fine, even if I'm gonna lose forever...]

How can we control our available time?
When we review our inps to compute the number of defeated enemies, how to compute the used time? Using the Windows clock?
I mean, it's quite difficult to compute the exact moment when the time finishes. Especially when you're shooting like a crazy monkey

I think there is no much time to get a good score. In the last game, I hoped more time to try improve positions.

The way I've been doing it is to hit F11, which turns on the frame numbers. I just approximate when my ship appears (usually around 600 if I start it right away), and figure if I get to about 21500-22000 frames, I can quit (since my time is 20727, 20727+600=21327...haven't actually made it that far yet though)...then I can figure it out exactly when I start and stop when reviewing the INP and can figure out how many Galaxians are left. You might need to pause and advance frame by frame, if one happens to be off screen when you run out of time, so it'll be easier to see it re-joining the group at the top.

Well I think CrazyKongFan answered your question... but for the record, if time expires and an alien is in process of blowing up (not necessarily disappeared from the screen), I will consider the alien dead.

@Giro-X: Well, I'm sure game selection will be the talk of the town when it comes to the post-tournament talk... but I figured two golden eras aren't that bad... but CrazyKongFan's thought of all five games being golden era? Not so much. :)

Just a preview that I was right about myself at least

After 55 minutes of training
Note
55

i can't survive over the 7000 frames. On 22k max. allowed frames.
I don't think I fail so much on these games anyway, so...

Next timetrial (if done), please, everyone that will lead it, "easier" games please
I beg for it

EDIT: sadly to say, and maybe a little cowardly
But I must say, also for my hand and eyes which are not so often happy of the treatment I give to them
If I feel so ashamed of the skills I achieve in these days, I may give up with no score uploading. Ok for trying, but if I discover that is a torture for me, better to leave.

@el_fumador: I counted 19 aliens left at end of time... that's what we're going to use instead of aliens actually killed. This is because the number of aliens given in a stage varies from 46 to 48.

@giro-X: Well, that's an issue I (or any other coordinator) am going to have regardless... I rarely seen an easy arcade game. But maybe that's just me...

@Chrono256: Well, I guess I can't please everybody all of the time...

Look at my recording!! I shoot the last alien in the last frame.

I guess I cannot improve this. 4:51 minutes is few time to beat the players that have more time than me.

Don't give up yet, Giro-x. Try at least to continue the battle  perhaps if you take a relax of one or two days you'll see the things from a point a view more optimistic.
It´s true that Galaxian is a very hard game, but Joust was quite hard too (at least for me :? ).

Sorry Gameboy, are you sure of this:

"12. 4:42 (15,879 frames) - Massimo Gaspari"

For me: 282 sec x 60.6060606 = 17.090 frames

Is correct?

Thanks.

Actually, it's 17,091 frames. :) But yeah, you're correct... I miscalculated. Sorry about that. :(
