Yam! Yam!?

This game has finished by 37 levels when playing with MAME0.103 though it must be to 38 levels. From which version did it change?:?

The above-mentioned is wolfMAME0.103.
When I tried with wolfMAME0.88, I finished by 39 levels. :? :? :?

MAWS claims the game only has 36 levels:

It also claims there were no changes since mame53. There are some links at the bottom of the MAWS page that may provide more information.

It is both played with wolfMAME0.98. On the other hand, it ends by 38 levels, and the other ends by 39 levels.
Are there any conditions?

I remember discussing this with Phil (I think) a few years ago. While playing it we got 36-38 different levels. (There are more, but the game only choose 36-38 random ones) Can't remember ever getting 39. It was some time ago, though, so my memory could fool me.

I spent some time experimenting to find out what decided the number of levels, looking at last digits at different rounds, what order the levels came in, holding certain keys between rounds, and other silly things, but never managed to find a pattern.

The phenomenon existed since before. :o
I thought that it was an effect of the version of MAME.

5 years I haven't play this game, but I remember it very well :
this is a very good game, BUT spoiled by 2 things :
*the non-rewarding-lifes-remaining which forces you to leech all your lifes except one on a particular level for lot of pts and 1st place at Marp
*the (apparently) random number of levels you play before game ends : 36, 37, 38, 39 (and even 40 if I remember correctly) are possible : we discussed that with Abbe and Lagavulin in 2000, but never found what forces that, or if it is random.
Nothing to do with version used for sure
... Hisa ??
I had made screenshots of different levels, I had recensed about 50

Congrats for finishing the game, Dan, but apparently the difference between you and I is that you've played one more level

Thanks,Phil. :)
That's right.
If more level is not played, it is difficult to beat.

We haven't heard rationale for amount of levels at mspac either, yet it has been discussed for long time at TG.
