New NoteBook for MAME...

Post by TRB_MetroidTeam »

Hello!

I just bought a NoteBook with the following specifications, and I would like to know what is important if I would run MAME on it. I never used NB for gaming. Any ideas? And about the OS? (Current MAME/WolfMAME version runs OK on 64Bits OS?) Thanks!

Sony Vaio, VPCCW21FX:
Intel® Core™ i3-330M (2.13GHz)
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Features: 14" LCD, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, CD/DVD playback/burning, NVIDIA® graphics (256MB VRAM), HDMI™ out, Bluetooth®

I'm not familiar with running 32-bit apps on a 64-bit version of Windows, but I do know that Linux will run 32-bit apps natively, so long as you have 32-bit versions of any libraries that the app needs.

Of course, you can also build your own 64-bit version, but you'll need to use MS Visual C++ 2008 (Express Edition is free) to build it. Or wait until 0.137, and use the new Mingw64 toolchain, which can also build a 64-bit version.

Or dump Windows, install Linux, and use SDLMAME. :)

i am running windows 7 (haven't tried mame yet).. / windows XP 64, and Vista 64..(triple boot),
on a hp 1419tx...dual amd 64..with integrated ati video card..

mame runs fine pretty much for most versions...

i haven't made a list yet..

if it doesn't, there are plenty of compatibility options to change that help..

For the most part you don't need to do anything and the Wow64 subsystem will automatically take care of things for you, loading the appropriate runtime support dlls from the appropriate WinSxS directories etc.

I've yet to encounter any 32bit programs that don't run successfully on my Windows7 64bit OS, including Mame. :)

Cheers,
BeeJay.

I hope that you are right, BeeJay.
I yet need to do a try on it. I will post comments when possible.

I'm already running Mame on Win7 64 bit without any issues!

It runs like a cut cat compared to my older machine. :)

Edit: In case you wanted the rest of the gory details:

Lenovo Think Pad T500
OS: Windows 7 Professional 64bit
Ram: 4.00GB Ram
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T9550 @ 2.66GHz
Screen: 15.4" at 1680x1050 resolution.

The screen res is nice when I'm dual monitoring it with my external screen as that also runs at 1680x1050, so I don't have to resize things anymore when moving between montiors. I'm also enjoying all the improved features in Win7, such as the new keyboard shorcuts for moving applications between monitors, pinned lists on the taskbar, etc.

The other nice thing is the HDD running at 7200RPM instead of the usual 5400RPM like my old laptop, which makes it so much faster for disk intenstive activities.

Cheers,
BeeJay.
