I can't seem to upload my file either, so here's a link. I watched your 199K game...hopefully watching this will give you some more ideas. Recorded on DOS MAME 0.36. Many thanks to Tommi for the DOS mouse drivers (it still doesn't feel quite like the real thing, but it's getting close).

hi mr hayes,

wow, thats a great game you played...
you managed the fleas and mushrooms on
the side really well..

although, i always have a problem keeping
it clear like that...and i noticed at times, the
single heads, just seem to come straight out
of the side (at the end)...i don't know how to stop
that..

also, is it better to lose a life near the extra, if you have 6 men,
or just keep playing, if you're on a roll?

finally, i'm not sure what the size limit is
on the replays, because most of mine are
getting to be around 500k, and yours was
over a meg, so that might be the issue..

i look forward to your future game replays...

i'm not sure how much better i can get, because
i seem to have hit the 'wall' for my game, somehow
my mushroom management isn't quite good enough yet.

ok, i take that back...after looking at your replay,
i tried leaving the side open, and it worked for awhile,

in my replay, things get slow around 100k (the board is
cleared out)..and then things really pick up...

i dont' think this strategy works in the normal centipede,
because the heads don't all come down the right hand
side..oh well..

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it and were able to pick up some tips to improve your own score, too.

Just keep practicing...it'll come.

Yup, usually happened when I didn't keep the right-most column clear enough. Depending on the side feed speed, it's probably better to let them hit the botton and then try and live through the side feed.
also, is it better to lose a life near the extra, if you have 6 men, or just keep playing, if you're on a roll?
Generally, it is better to keep playing. It can be distracting to try and look up at the score to see how close you are to a free man. A split second like that can be the difference between finishing a wave or not.

You got it. In regular Centipede the heads come down all across the screen. However, the "other part" of the strategy in my recording was to keep the fleas from falling, too (for normal Centipede, I usually do NOT do that). It might benefit your regular Centipede scores if you try it, though. In one sense, it's the same idea of playing the "blob" style.

yes, thanks for the inspiration, i dont' know what it is, after not playing
this game for a few years, i usually don't play this well,
but i've improved to be more consistent in my scores,
at least until the 150k-200k range..
Just keep practicing...it'll come.
i think i've played this game for at least 6 hours
in a row the other day, and finally developed
an approach that helps..

if i play conservatively (slow) at first, i can extend
the game for awhile, until about 100k, but this is
a rather painstaking, and time consuming way to
play..however, it usually ends up deteroriating as the spider
speeds up, and the fleas keep falling.

..but if i play fast (let the fleas come out)...the game picks up,
and i get better practice on the full screen method, but i end up with a lower score, and die faster..

Yup, usually happened when I didn't keep the right-most column clear enough. Depending on the side feed speed, it's probably better to let them hit the botton and then try and live through the side feed.
in my game, i kept the side open, but the heads
STILL came out on the bottom...i'm not sure why...
they must have kept bumping into each other
all the way down..

Generally, it is better to keep playing. It can be distracting to try and look up at the score to see how close you are to a free man. A split second like that can be the difference between finishing a wave or not.
this brings up another point..

i'll admit, having a screen of poisoned mushrooms can
make it a lot easier to clear off the centipede/heads at
times...at other times it makes it worse..

i think dying at the appropriate time, can help,
by resetting the poisoned mushrooms..

any thoughts on that?

Donald
trust me, i've tried, and tried (and tried)..

but i still haven't figured out the 'sweet' spot for
the mushrooms....even if i manage to keep the
fleas away for awhile, they always end up winning..
(not to mention the spider nailing me)..

anyways. you should try some of the other clones,
especially the 'super-centipede' from the arcade
classics, it might give you more of a challenge...

i've put up other high scores on the other revisions,
and bootlegs (like 'magic worm')..hope to see you
there also..

thanks for all the help..

why is it you can't upload? Perhaps your ISP or personal firewall blocks the port needed for sending/outgoing?

Negative 1, if you are having problems uploading try using the other form which is usually used if you're an aol user. That way you can lift your file directly off your webspace and onto marp and you won't have to keep posting your links on here. I sometimes get problems uploading (although not much recently) so I use that form and it works everytime. Give it a go.

hi ln2,

actually, it's kind of intermitent....sometimes it works,
and sometimes it doesn't..its not my isp..because
other uploads have worked..

i think it might be a file size issue?

also i'm on a dial-up connection, so that might
affect it also...i've noticed that when i use a
high speed connection it works fine.

i'm NOT on aol, and i've tried the other form,
and have had problems with that also..

i'll see what i can do..

thanks for the help..

perhaps it's the time of "day" you are trying to upload. I have found there are certain times each day it doesn't work at all. I think the host this site is on is too laggy or has lots of packet loss from busy use certain times of the day so then uploads fail.

This server is on GMT I think, but confirmation of that would be nice to know.

I try to upload where it's the wee hours of the morning for the server....which conveniently for me means the late evening in the US.

..so perhaps you tend to try most uploads in that time period where it doesn't work very well, if at all...so try varying when you upload and perhaps you can find a time where it's good for you to upload more reliably since you state it sometimes works.
