Golden Era Game of the Week 12/11/04: Stargate

Golden Era Game of the Week

See introduction here

The Game: Stargate

romname: stargate

Reward: $100 (usd)

Deadline for submission to MARP: December 17, 2004 2359 hours GMT

Further Bounty: $250 (usd) for exceeding 194,200 by January 1, 2005

We'll end as we began, with a real classic.

I planned on finishing with Defender. I planned on getting a controller sufficiently like the original machine's panel. I planned on playing enough to get a decent score. I did none of these.

I never found a controller made that was close enough to the original in my opinion, and never got around to checking into having one made or figuring out how to rig a real control panel to my computer.

So I'll save Defender for some future day, and we'll do Stargate. Stargate was the sequel to Defender, same gameplay but with more and tougher enemies. Experts in Defender didn't take long to master Stargate either and marathoned it on factory settings, so we'll use five ships only. Other settings should be default. I forgot in my game (I literally just played once), but since I only earned two extra ships, it wound up being a five man game anyway.

Scott Heyano set the record for five ships at 194,200. I'd really like to see some world class play on this one, so I'll put up the further bounty for that mark.

Use WolfMAME .89

5 men only, but 5 smart bombs too?

The score you quoted is TG settings? If it is, I think 5 smart bombs is TG, same as Defender.

I didn't see a place to change the smart bomb setting, I presume it is automatically the same as ships?

Hi,

I noticed that the settings for Stargate in Wolf78 are not the same as in Wolf89. I use Wolf78 to record everything since it is TG's official MAME emulator. Is it possible that I could use that to submit my recording?

Also, this 0.78 provides left and right movement, which is not provided in the 0.89.

LMK.

Left and right movement was removed from MAME because it's a "stupid hack"

And I'm not sure what settings you mean, as the game determines the default settings, not MAME.

For this week's GEGOTW, you must use WolfMAME .89. I'm sure TG will eventually come to their senses and accept other versions of WolfMAME, or some up with another version of MAME of their own.

Separate buttons for left and right movement weren't available on the arcade machine, and therefore really shouldn't be used for MARP recordings anyway.

Hm..., with left-right moving stargate is easier to control than without it.

Agree... but it is not faithful to the original controls. I tried playing it on the new MAME, but the controls are so hard...

Aint giving up yet.

Just to be clear here John...

You want us to change the settings in game before we start, yes? It's different than just playing till you lose 5 lives. You start with 5 bombs too, and don't get any extras. That TG record is looking awesome.

Well, it's not so much that I want you to, but it's a necessary evil.

With practice it just takes a few seconds.

Defender machines did exist in some arcades with an 8-way joystick for movement taking care of up/down/thrust/reverse. IMO it's much harder to play to the expert level this way.

Results:
1st: Ian Sutton
2nd: BBH
3rd: Kasht

Looks like interest fizzled a little bit this last week.

My own fault. I had really wanted to get a good control setup for Defender, put up a decent score myself, and put a larger bounty on it, but it just didn't work out.

Anyway, congratulations to Ian yet again. He is the overall cumulative winner, and I will post separately with those results shortly.

I was on vacation most of the week so that's my excuse :)
