You can see here at 3 point!

By the way, I took a look to Alpha's INP and he only uses four lives!

i have wolf 0108, i have alpha's download, it is in the inp folder unzipped (and zipped, also) and the rom is in the rom folder, so what do i do next?
when i click on the mame application, a black window opens then disappears in a couple of seconds. is that normal?
please form an orderly queue, and no squabbling!

0.108 probably predates MAME's built-in game selection, so you'll have to run it from the command line. MAME is, and always has been, a command line program (not to be confused with DOS programs).

Under Windows XP, it should be at Start->Accessories->Command Prompt (from memory), or bring up the Run dialog, and enter "cmd" (without quotes).

Quickfire setup:
Open Command Prompt.
Switch to the folder containing MAME ( enter cd \<path to WolfMAME>)
Enter mame -cc
Now you will have a file called mame.ini in the folder containing the default settings.
Edit this file (Notepad will do for this task, I'll assume you at least know how to use Notepad),
Change the setting for 'rompath' to match the path where your ROMs are located.
Hopefully, you'll have record.bat and playback.bat in your WolfMAME folder, if not, then copy them from another version of WolfMAME.
Enter playback <game shortname> <INP filename>
Note that the INP filename does not include the .inp extension.
Sit back and watch.

barry,
thank you very much indeed for your detailed response.
unfortunately, i am not pc literate and am stumped at the first instruction!!
"open a command prompt"
i do not even know what that is.
i have only ever used a gui version, so i have no clue about anything else. i have read and copied previous instructions on here, and have had no luck at all. i even copy/pasted what i should type from examples, and nothing happens. then i think " should there be spaces between these words? And a - right before "playback"? the questions i have are endless! i am a woodworker, and never used a pc for work and have had one for 6 years, and is basically used for entertainment and emails. it's a shame, as i really want to watch some replays and cannot. i am very frustrated!!! so much so, i must repeat an earlier thread i started.
"WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! SOMEBODY HELP ME!!!!!!!!!" ahem!
batch files, dosboxes, command lines, renaming inp's, unzipping nvrams and executing snapshots, all reverse japanese to me!!! lol!!!
really, i am baffled.
i must assume that something else was wrong, as i read thoroughly the previous instructions and executed them exactly. god knows.
and, honestly, i have never used notepad. !! why would i? lol!!
have you ever cut a mitred dovetail? see what i mean?
it makes me feel stupid.
one day, somewhere, some time, i will see an old inp, whether it is zipped or unzipped!!!
i may be dumb about this, but i will kick your ass at kung fu master!!! looooooooooooooool!!!!!!!!!!
cheers bruv!!

ok,
i opened a command prompt, entered the first line, and it said "the syntax of the command is incorrect".
i copy/pasted your direction...
my mind is twisting with turmoil, and am getting subconciously violent!!!!
lol!

The Command Prompt should be somewhere in the Accessories menu. Or you can search for and run cmd.exe.

Just to be clear, the bold text that I showed are commands to be typed at the command prompt, and text in angled brackets (<>) describe what should be typed there, since it will vary from task to task.

And remember, I am not a Windows user, so don't expect screenshots (best I can manage are screenshots from Windows 95, which MESS can emulate).

kernsy, did you try to cd to your mame path where you extracted wolfmame108.exe and then extracted alp_kungfum_786540_wolf108.zip into the INP subfolder of this directory? When you are in CMD mode, everything depends on where you are located in order for extracted/copied files (like mame was on your machine) to run. Example in my case it's d:\mame on the D: drive, by default CMD starts in the C: folder and you have to change to another drive leter with the X: command , i used D:. Here's a copy of my CMD commands I used.

C:\Documents and Settings\user>cd d:\mame

C:\Documents and Settings\user>d:

D:\mame>mame.exe kungfum -playback kungfum_wolf108_786540.inp

this should (and does for me) work to playback alpha's recording.
