2006 World Cup ...

Somewhere for the annoying and/or off-topic threads to go. Feel free to post about whatever, but abuse will still be dealt with, and possibly with more force. Especially pac-porno. ;)

World Cup is over!
Congratulations ITALY!
And France, your team was my preference to win the final... until one moment where some player received an redcard, and I changed the side. :)

Hehehe... now you will have one final match to have on your memory... at least during 4 years ;)
BTW... France played very well the cup... and Penalty Kicks are Penalty Kicks!

Honestly, this ending to the ultimate match is just one of the reasons a lot of us in the US cannot embrace the sport. It features some of the finest athletes on the face of the planet. But, why would you want a match of this magnitude to end merely on a series of free kicks where the element of luck plays a much bigger role than actual skill. I would prefer that the overtime session not have a time limit and end on the first goal scored.

If anyone could explain to me why a rule such as this isn't instituted, please enlighten me. Yes, I understand the players should be totally exhausted playing this way. But, that is where "survival of the fittest" comes into play. May the better conditioned and prepared team prevail...even if it takes another 2 hours!

I've likened the shootout in football/soccer to having a baseball game that has gone 12 innings suddenly being decided by a home run derby. What a lame ending. There's got to be a better way. Yes, the shootout has elements of excitement I agree. But, it just seems like a football/soccer match should end in a manner consistent with how the rest of the match was played.

Just my opinion. I'm not trying to slam the sport. I just wonder why it is played this way.

Like Steven Colbert said, it's like having the NBA finals decided with a game of horse.

Perhaps if the overtime keeps going they could add 2 substitutions so the players stay fresh. You could also drop the amount of players to 9 on each side to open up the game a bit more.

Not bad suggestions. I have heard plenty of the "this game has been around 100+ years" excuses from my European and Mexican co-workers as a way to justify the status quo. That just doesn't wash. I suppose then with that mentality that we should re-introduce slavery to the US simply on the basis that it existed and was fine for many who were the slave owners. OK, a little over the top, but you get the point.

having to agree with the potentially unfairness of the ending kick match. Free kicks aren't that far off from how the game is played anyway. Many football matches are decided on free kicks from penalties inside the box anyway. But this is really all the ammo i can come up with against football having a game decided by them. At least they did have a couple of over time periods if the score was tied this year, i didn't think they had that in many previous years but what do americans know about soccer anyway :) Afterall we scheduled regular MLS matches during the semi finals of the world cup, how lame ass of the american soccer league is that?

The headbutt deserved the loss and it was achieved...

Sorry for all USA people but soccer is the most important sports in the world. Why ? I think you can't understand and I don't know what I can say to you.
Italy sunday night was something incredible: big screen in all cities, and at the and all totally crazy. You can't drive or walk in all the cities!
And the same is if to win was Brazil (probably the most), Argentina, Englang, Germany, French, Spain, all African nations, all Sud-center Amercian nations, all part of the world with the exception of North america and few other (maybe australia ?)
Why Soccer is so important and USA can't understand ? Like people don't care and think is boring Amercian Football, baseball, hockey, nascar etc. you don't care and think is boring soccer!
For the penalty question.. ok, not good (like the refree that can be corrupt like we saw in Italy and Germany league), but I don't make the rules, we love soccer for other things.

P.s.
The only Amercian sports (if you can call sport) I like is wrestling, I watch it from 20 years.

I think no matter how good the suggestions are the FIFA will never take away the penalty kicks, lest they be castrated by millions of rabid fans. In the end I guess it is a tradition thing. Although I do know many "true" fans that agree there should be a change. Maybe when the robot leagues get popular.

I never said it didn't require skill. But, the matchup is so one-sided that it's not a very good way to display the skills of BOTH kicker and goalie. Perhaps moving the ball back a bit in order to give the goalie at least a chance? There surely must be a way to make it even more exciting than it is.
