Thanks for the game choice. It's nice to have a game where I can just sit down and play instead of having to spend a bunch of time researching techniques and finding secrets.

Well, to be fair Donkey Kong certainly has its share of techniques and "secrets", you just happen to already know alot of them :)

Here's a few basic tips for those that have never played Donkey Kong before (*warning* spoilers follow - don't read below if you like to figure everything out yourself):

1) Whether barrels go down a ladder or not is semi-random, but you can partially influence the barrels, especially on the later screens. If your joystick is pointed towards the barrel (left/right) when a barrel goes over a ladder, there is a better chance the barrel will go down the ladder. On the first barrel screen this doesn't increase the chance it will go down the ladder much, but on later screens it greatly increases the chance it will go down the ladder. This also holds true if you are actually climbing the ladder. While the idea is that this is supposed to make the game harder by making the barrels try to get in your way, you can also use this to your advantage by steering the barrels to go where you want. Steering the barrels is very important for consistently clearing the barrels on the higher levels.

2) The "random" point values you get for killing certain objects with the hammer are random. Don't waste your time trying to figure out how to get 800's every time.

3) On the elevator stages of L-4 and later in order to get up the last ladder you need to look for a spring that lands to the far right of Donkey Kong's foot followed by a spring that lands on the left side of his foot. This gives you a big enough gap to make it up the ladder if you time your start just right and you approach the ladder from the left side. Since you have to start moving before you see the second spring, to consistently clear the level you need to know how to retreat if the second spring is also towards the right. You can use save states to practice this and reduce your frustration. At first you may just want to try getting up the ladder with a spring that lands to the far right of Donkey Kong's foot and just hope you get lucky that the next spring isn't also to the far right.

4) On the rivets stage when you kill a fireball with the hammer it will respawn on the opposite side of the screen (right/left) from you. You can use this to your advantage by clearing all the rivets on one side and then any fireballs you kill after that will get trapped on that side of the screen as long as you are on the other half of the screen when they respawn.

5) On the conveyer belt stage stay on the left half of the screen until all the initial fireballs come out. The fireballs always come out on the same half of the stage you are on. If you let all the fireballs come out on the left side then a lot of the time you can run up the right side without anything getting in your way.

6) On the conveyer belt stage the bottom conveyer belt reverses direction each time Donkey Kong gets all the way back to the left side of the screen.

7) Fireballs like to move up on the screen but won't move down if you are on the same level as them or higher. So they have a tendency to "chase" you up. If you need a fireball to move down you need to get below it and then hope it moves down. On the conveyer belt screen the fireballs will frequently get trapped at the top. When they do they tend to hang out more on the right of the screen then the left so it is frequently easier to get to the top on the left side if there are a couple of fireballs already on the top.

8) The game has a lot of randomness, so sometimes you just get screwed. The "wild" barrels on the barrel screen that come down diagonally are just evil.

hi trb
i have a question for you: what if I packed my inp with a "later" wlf file (i mean a wlf file from same pc, with same controller and game settings)? my guess is that it would be disqualified anyway, wouldn't it?

evil is the right word!

Thx this was a bad game for me, i never think that i have a possibility win this round. I was stuck in the first days with very low scores but in the last days I get a score around 80k like you, but at the end I get this score in a incredible and luckily coin. That is my final score so, i don't think that y can do a better score.

Sorry for my english.

Congrats, Ogemalis. You keep going on. :)

This game was a good choice, but I was terrible on elevator stage (level 04). Very hard game, but pretty fun. I´ll play it more.
