[K11] Rules and Schedule

Post by Zerstorung »

Welcome to MARP's 11th Knockout Tournament

This competition will be a 7 week long challenge covering a variety of different titles, one per week. To get far in this tournament, you must be able to consistently show a degree of skill in many games.

First some common formalities regarding MAME and MARP:

-Each recording shall be played with one credit only.
-All games are to be played on MAME default settings, unless otherwise noted (delete the game's .cfg file if you are not sure if you are playing with defaults)
-Recordings must achieve a minimum averaged speed of 90%
-NVRAM must not be present for a recording to play back properly (record.bat, which is included in the MAME folder typically prevents NVRAM from being created)
-No autofire, custom buttons, or duplicate input settings may be used.

Additional rules for K11:
-The version to use is the most recent release as of this tournament - wolfmame152 (get it here -> http://wolfmame.marpirc.net/wolfmame-0152.7z). We will accept recordings using wolf106 as a backup in case of hardware slowdown/recording issues, but we encourage you to use 152 as one or more games will require it for play.
-Please submit your recordings within 24 hours of achieving your score to keep competition active. This will be enforced during the later rounds, but we would like to discourage sandbagging and sitting on scores throughout the tournament.
-When submitting your inp to marp, you are required to enter K11 somewhere in your description for your score to count.
-If you have a higher score in a specific game on marp or are unable to submit your recording at all, you may upload a .zip file with your recording to the game thread. Please use MARP's normal submission process unless this is necessary.
-You may submit as many scores as you like throughout that game's week as long as the newer submission scores higher than the submission you are replacing.

If you have difficulty setting up or run into issues regarding these regulations, please let us know as soon as you can so we can help.

Tournament Format:
In this year's Knockout, we will be deviating from the normal 1v1 style of past knockouts. Each round shall involve all players competing against each other, and the top scorers will advance.

The tournament will consist of 7 weeks and 7 games. The first three weeks will be qualifier rounds. In the past, these rounds were used for seeding in the eventual bracket.

In this tournament, the placings in these three rounds will be combined and the first elimination will occur after the scores are tallied from the third game. This means all players will be guaranteed the chance to compete in three games, but must do well across all three to advance to the fourth.

Scoring for the qualifier rounds will be as follows:
1st place (0 points)
2nd place (2 points)
3rd place (3 points)
4th place (4 points)
5th..... and so forth

To be ranked and registered for further competition, you must submit a score on at least TWO of the THREE qualifier games. Any players who have only submitted for one game shall be retired from the rankings and all placings will be recalculated then. Players who submit scores for just two games will have their standings calculated as though they have achieved a score of 0 for their missing game. Regardless of this leniency, I strongly encourage you to submit scores for all three games.

From there, we will be following one of two elimination paths, depending on participation level.

After the qualifiers have been calculated, if the number of participants is at least 32, we shall follow this elimination format:

Q1-Q3 (All Entrants, top 30 advances)
R4 (30 players, top 18 advances)
R5 (18 players, top 6 advances)
R6 (6 players, top 2 advances)
R7 (2 players, winner is determined)

Otherwise, for fewer than 32 qualifying players, this format will be used:

Q1-Q3 (All Entrants, top 16 advances)
R4 (16 players, top 8 advances)
R5 (8 players, top 4 advances)
R6 (4 players, top 2 advances)
R7 (2 players, winner is determined)

In the event of a tie at the elimination threshold (two players tied for 16th, for example) additional players will advance. If the final round happens to tie (improbable), the result will be determined a drawn victory.

Tournament Schedule:
Qualifier 1 (GMT 00:00 Sunday March 9th - GMT 23:59 Saturday March 15th)
Qualifier 2 (GMT 02:00 Sunday March 16th - GMT 23:59 Saturday March 22th)
Qualifier 3 (GMT 02:00 Sunday March 23th - GMT 23:59 Saturday March 29th)
Round 4 (GMT 02:00 Sunday March 30th - GMT 23:59 Saturday April 5th)
Round 5 (GMT 02:00 Sunday April 6th - GMT 23:59 Saturday April 12th)
Round 6 (GMT 02:00 Sunday April 13th - GMT 23:59 Saturday April 19th)
Round 7 (GMT 02:00 Sunday April 20th - GMT 23:59 Saturday April 26th)

We reserve the right to delay the start of a play week as needed for coordination/verification purposes. We will do our best to minimize any such delays.

If there are any questions about the format, please ask.

Thank you for your interest in K11 and I hope for us all to see some good competition!

Hi guys! I have some doubts/suggestions.

Now it's ok, thanks for fixing that.
Zerstorung wrote:-Recordings must achieve a minimum averaged speed of 90%
Despite MARP rules require 90%, why to reduce from 95% (all the recent competitions used 95%) to 90%? In my opinion 10% slower than the normal speed is way too much for competition purposes!
Zerstorung wrote:-Please submit your recordings within 24 hours of achieving your score to keep competition active. This will be enforced during the later rounds, but we would like to discourage sandbagging and sitting on scores throughout the tournament.
Why this 24 hours rule is not enforced since the 1st round?
Zerstorung wrote:In the event of a tie at the elimination threshold (two players tied for 16th, for example) additional players will advance.
It's not a bad rule, but I'd prefer pre-setting rules to tie-breaking. Ok! PS.: The qualifying scoring system probably will lead to many ties.
Zerstorung wrote:If the final round happens to tie (improbable), the result will be determined a drawn victory.
Hey, in my opinion a draw is never a victory in competitions of this kind. C'mon, why not to decide (previously) a tie-breaker rule? It's easy! Some suggestions already used: a) best "score" in the qualification rounds; b) higher position reached in qualification (or all previous) rounds; c) position in the previous round (ie: semi-final, in this case); z) any other way to break the draw!
Zerstorung wrote:you must submit a score on at least TWO of the THREE qualifier games.
Why? Forgetting how hard it would be for an "1-round" player qualify, I suggest guarantee/allow the maximum of participation with the K11 rules, no matter the personal reasons for the player submitting for 1 round only.

Why not announce the next game at 00:00? There are not relationship with the previous results to the next game announcement, for players that wanna start playing the next game, right?

Anyway, with these rules, there are not advantages in qualifying 1st or last place...

The latest version of WolfMAME is mandatory in this tournament, it's sometimes slower on older systems. Anyway we are enforcing a strong speed check, refusing recordings where slowdow is concentrated in some parts while having a good average recording speed.

In first rounds it's not a problem, there are many players involved. In elimination rounds we'll enforce this.

Without the 1vs1 eliminations there is no real need to break a tie. The only tie you would break is the one across the threshold in/out, but it's not a problem if there are 17 players insead of 16, or 5 instead of 4. Breaking a tie could be needed in the last round only, if the game's scoresystem could easily produce similar scores. If such a tie should be broken I would personally use the submission time, but don't worry: the game options we have for final round have not this kind of problem.

The qualifying phase is three games, from my spreadsheet experiments there's no way a 1st place alone is enough to pass to R4 with 28 players. This rule is there to protect other players, cleaning the board from big lone scores from players already good in a particular game that play that game only.

Yes, it's a good point.

This is the price for no-more seeing a 2nd place player eliminated by the first while 15th passes with no adversary. It's the first KO with this format, let's see if it fits to the challenge.
