I've already indicated how I would vote.

Several others have as well.

...only when heavily under the influence of Irn-Bru. Which is all the time. So I guess that's irrelevant.

Seriously, though... The advantage gained by using digital input for Analog controlled games is just as significant as using one button for two (unless very precise control of direction and velocity is required).

How they would vote.

Sorry, I thought that was obvious.

It's not a stupid discussion. Mapping more buttons to one or the other way arround should not be allowed if you ask me. That is not how the games are played in a real arcade.

OK, then I ask again: what with inps where key mapping was used or where is impossible to check it?
You want change this rule too late.

And what with games where without key mapping playing is almost impossible on keyboard (Crazy Climber, Assault, ...)?

Code: Select all

2.n) Mapping two or more of the original arcade machine's buttons to a single key or joystick button in MAME is not permitted.
Why? On arcade machine is impossible to made it without access to control panel :D

If key mapping will be disallowed for 'real arcade pplay spirit' then we must change rule 2g must be changes too:

Code: Select all

g) Games must be played at a MINIMUM of 90% of their full speed. Press F11 to show the speed display, if you are unsure
I don't saw that on real arcade machine game speed was 90%. We must set minimum 99%.

People!! We play on MAME not on arcade machine!!

Actually, some people do use MAME on an arcade machine. Sure, it's a PC inside a cabinet, but still :)

I just measured the performance of my controllers' buttons. Basically I pressed a few buttons at once, and measured the time between the presses.

A = Average time between the buttons (In frames. Averaged from 100 results at 60 frames per second)
D = Distribution: (Frames:Ratio)

2 buttons
Keyboard
A: 0.72
D: 0:33%, 1:62%, 2:5%
Gamepad
A: 0.11
D: 0:89%, 1:11%
Mouse
(Note: Held it with one hand, pressed the buttons with the other)
A: 0.10
D: 0:93%, 1:4%, 2:3%

3 buttons
Keyboard
A: 1.05
D: 0:12%, 1:71%, 2:17%
Gamepad
(Note: The third button is smaller than the others, making it a bit awkward)
A: 0.27
D: 0:73%, 1:27%

Conclusion:
Those without high quality controllers are already at a disadvantage. Any such rule screws them over even more, whilst having virtually no effect on people with decent controllers.

About DBZ2:
mahlemiut wrote:Looks like Nanni has buttons 3 and 4 mapped to one key. Probably buttons 1 and 2 as well, but that is used much less frequently
Yes, fighter games.
Players with sticks can easy do ... for example 3 circles. Try made 3 circles without mistake on keyboard and additionaly use buttons combination.
I know others harder combinations for fighter games on keyboard where you must think about good pressing cursor and next about good pressing buttons. On stick you don't think about stick move because it's easy, you are concentrated on buttons only. Mapping keyboard buttons is only one help here.
I know what I say.

Barry do you want kick off keyboard players from MARP?
