[poll canceled]New rule, using multiple button mapping

We are voting on this rule:

Code: Select all

2.n) Mapping two or more of the original arcade machine's buttons to a single key or joystick button in MAME is not permitted. Also it is not permitted to use more than one key or button in MAME for the same arcade machine button simultaneously.
This is to get even playing ground, and close as possible arcade experience.

Example1: You map key Q to mame buttons 1 and 2 and 3, you get 3 pushes by pushing only once --- not allowed

Example2: You map keys Q,W,E,R,T,Y to mame button 1 and smash them simultaneously, to get unhuman firing speed ---not allowed

Check out discussion HERE

This poll runs 6 days, thank you,
TJT

Sounds fine - but what about mapping one key to two directions, ie: for easier diagonals. I don't have so much an issue with this, and would be willing to allow that specifically.

It would probably also be a good idea to add the examples to the rule as well, just to make it clearer.

I'll do now another discussion about that. allowing diagonals can be added to this rule later.
My opinion would be that it's not ok to do with atleast fighting games.

I voted "yes".

And I would like to point out that the examples Tommi gives were, in my opinion, always against the rules.

We're just making it more obvious.

Doing that will end up worse than just tapping a single button. You will only ever be able to fire if you release all of the buttons before pressing another one, which will rarely happen without incredibly accurately timed keypresses. That is, of course, if it doesn't completely lock up your keyboard.

It's far, far better to use a single large button and tap it with two fingers.

Some arcade sticks are not so expensive.

And allowing diagonals is another discussion already.

We are just trying to make a rule here what has been unwritten rule already.

End of discussion.

Back when I was using the keyboard with MAME, I never had any need for extra key mapping. If there was a clash, then I found a config that didn't clash.

And I wonder if USB keyboards suffer from clashing...?

Sorry if we're ruining MARP for you.

By the way, what is your username on MARP?

If isn't expensive, then pleasy, buy one to me :)

You're setting up new rules cause you are bored and you are willing to show-off how important you are, your new rule won't help anyone, on the contrary it will be unhelpful.

Thanks a bunch. I'm so happy to run this poll.
This wasn't my idea to start the conversation about button mapping anyway.
