you might be able to complete it if you use a debug compile and run with -debug .. but maybe the recording wouldn't work at all then .. never tried that :-p
thats why the bug is sadly impossible to trace... it refuses to lock up if you run the game with the debugger ..
I guess in theory you could record with the debug compile and then play it back with a debug compile. but who will have a debug compile of mame version 36b11 (or mame60 two years from now) sitting around with the rest of the copies of versions you would need to playback old recordings.
