Post by GHEMANT »

ROUND 1 «PHASE 2» View Point "viewpoin" (Sammy) 1992

Image

Target Score: TOP 36 overall from ROUND 1 move on ROUND 2 (according to KnockOut 7’s rules you must be in the top 36 at the end of Phase 3 of Round 1 based on total leaderboard points earned from Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3 of Round 1).

GENRE: SHOOTING. Category "ISOMETRIC SCROLLING"

Duration of round: September 29th 2008 20:00 GMT – October 8rd 2008 19:59 GMT [9 DAYS PLAY]

TIME REMAINING

Since in each of the three phases of play of ROUND 1 there are special targets to reach, we decided to extend the duration of the competition for each of the first three phases by two days to give the players the ability to better study the selected games. The duration of later ROUNDS will be seven days.

Place in your ROMS folder: viewpoin (parent rom) + neogeo (bios neogeo). World version of this game is the same of japanese version, however we use the bios Europe MVS 2 which is the WolfMAME default.

Ok, the fight continues!
This time you’ll have to take on a game notoriously known as almost impossible to finish with only one credit. Great graphics and a terrific soundtrack are points in favour of this evolution of the older Zaxxon. Gameplay is simple and immediate, but you have to get used to the isometric view that at first can easily fool you. The game is not that frustrating if you lose a life, as there is only one power up to collect. There are very few players that have finished it on only one credit, but we think it’s likely that more than one will be successful during K7. The special targets are very hard to satisfy and will put to test the abilities of even the most expert shmuppers. Anyway, due to the high difficulty the bonus points are high and could determine who gets to the top of the Round 1 leaderboard.

The history of the popularity of View Point

View Point had great fame for many years because of several linked events that happened after its release date (11/20/1992). Initially it had been announced by many sources as the largest arcade game in history (some news reports, subsequently demonstrated as fake, reported it as 144 megabit). Since at the end of 1992 first place was strongly owned by beat'em'up, the fact that this record could have been beaten by a shmup contributed to the hype around this game. Once it was released in arcades, the players' expectations were fully satisfied. The game offered a great graphics level for the period and a notable soundtrack, widely praised in all magazines. The visuals brought to memory a game released ten years before: Zaxxon. View Point had great success in arcades, helped by an interesting bonus system that involved even the most avid players. With the home release for Neo Geo AES, because of a problem of an unexpected incompatibility between US and Japanese systems (and probably vice versa) the game could not be played correctly on all systems. In the west this started many doubts about possible production defects that inevitably slowed down the distribution of released copies, making the product more rare. Prices went up and demand grew, for the period 1993-1994, during which it wasn't easy to find it in Europe. All this increased the desire of players to own and play this seemingly unobtainable game, and its fame as a great shooter was continuously reported in several game magazines. Over the years View Point’s legend has been almost forgotten, because of the number of great games in its genre released after it, and because of the arrival on the market of manic shmups. Here's something serious. View Point is a game studied to be played in alternative player and in fact the AES version is built just for that. Anyway there's an option in the MVS version for 2 simultaneous players. Because of this, View Point was the first cartridge that had unofficial modification to dip switches that could be disabled in home edition.

REMEMBER - there will be a Phase 3 of Round 1 after this, so if you stink at this game, you're not necessarily out yet!

SPECIAL TARGETS LIST : TOTAL MAX 975 PTS or 1250 PTS BONUS
The main news about this edition of the Knockout is the special targets to reach. These targets have been proposed to push players to reach their best performances and to let them find the most hidden parts of the games. The targets, if reached, allow players to add bonus points to their leaderboard point total for the Phase.

Remember that the first 6 gamers at the top of the leaderboard chart based on total points after the 3 phases of ROUND 1 will skip the 1-on-1 ROUND 2 and advance directly to the calmer ROUND 3. We expect that reaching the special targets listed below will be essential to reaching one of these 6 privileged positions. While allowing the top 6 players from ROUND 1 to skip ROUND 2 will probably deprive ROUND 2 of some of the best players, it also allows those players to avoid the sometimes frustrating and random matchups of ROUND 2. The targets highlighted in red are of extreme difficulty and we think it’s unlikely that anybody will reach them during K7. They are performances that would be difficult to reach even with much more time than the 9 days given for each Phase of ROUND 1. Regardless, we want to push players to their limits, and we expect these special targets to do that. Each target is characterized by a coefficient of difficulty (1 coefficient point = 25 bonus points for the score board).

IMPORTANT : If you reach one or more targets, write it in the comment of your replay, two examples: "K7 TARGET A" or "K7 TARGET B+D". It’s possible to perform multiple targets in the same replay. If you reached all of the normal targets in the same replay, you’d add 975 bonus points to your scoreboard total (A+B+C+D+E+F = 50pts + 150pts + 150pts + 175pts + 300pts + 150pts = total 975pts). Target F is worth 150 additional points on top of the 150 from Target B. The red “MISSION IMPOSSIBLE” bonus targets cannot be combined with bonuses from the normal targets. If you reach a Mission Impossible target, you get only the points from that target and do not also get the points from the A,B,C... targets.

TARGET A) (COEFFICIENT OF DIFFICULTY 2) :

COMPLETE STAGE 1 WITH NO MISS AND AT LEAST 60.000 PTS.
It sounds like an easy mission, but it's not. You will have to fully engage yourself to max out the score in the first stage (with no miss) to obtain the required 60,000 pts. The maximum proven score for the first stage is 62.500 points, so you don’t have much margin for error. If you can do this you'll obtain an extra bonus:
+ 50 PTS in scoreboard

TARGET B) (COEFFICIENT OF DIFFICULTY 6) :

1CC.
Considering the game's well known difficulty, this is not a target reachable by everyone. If you finish the game you obtain an extra bonus:
+ 150 PTS in scoreboard

TARGET C) (COEFFICIENT OF DIFFICULTY 6) :

REACH 10.000 PTS VALUE FROM SPECIAL BONUS ITEMS BY THE END OF THIRD STAGE.
To reach this target it's necessary to collect all special bonuses of consequential value present in the first three stages. If you can do this you'll obtain an extra bonus:
+ 150 PTS in scoreboard

TARGET D) (COEFFICIENT OF DIFFICULTY 7) :

COLLECT AT LEAST 20 STARS.
Collect during the game at least 20 GOLDEN STARS. It's not necessary that their value is consequential, in other word even if you lose lives the count of stars is equally valid. If you can do this you'll obtain an extra bonus:
+ 175 PTS in scoreboard

TARGET E) (COEFFICIENT OF DIFFICULTY 12) :

COLLECT 1UP X 3.
With this target, the difficulty increases considerably. Find and collect in the game the 3 hidden 1up items. This is very difficult because the 1ups require particular conditions in order to appear. If you can do this you'll obtain an excellent extra bonus:
+ 300 PTS in scoreboard

TARGET F) (COEFFICIENT OF DIFFICULTY 12) :

1CC + NO MISS.
Finish the game without losing any lives. This mission can be considered as the most difficult ever reached by a western player on this game. Probably this is the most unreachable normal target in this tournament. If you can do this you'll obtain a good extra bonus:
+ 150 PTS + 150 PTS = 300 PTS in scoreboard

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 1 (COEFFICIENT OF DIFFICULTY 33 – MISSION EXTREME) :

1CC NO MISS + STAGE 1 WITH AT LEAST 60.000 PTS + 19 STARS + 1UP X 3.
It's the first of the "extreme targets". You will have to finish the game without losing any lives, and to collect 19 GOLDEN STAR bonus items (only the bonuses with star shape are counted). Since you can’t die for this target, the star value is necessarily consequential. In addition you must also obtain at least 60.000 pts at the end of the first stage and recover the three 1up items hidden in the game! The difficulty of course isn't about recovering all these hidden items, but understanding what you have to do in order to find them. Don't waste your time looking for a way on how to trigger those hidden items on the web or in video game magazines, this game was purposely chosen because its secrets have not been disclosed yet not on the web nor anywhere else. You will only have to rely on your own "experience" as a videogame player. Extremely Hard target. If you can do this you'll obtain an enormous extra bonus:
+ 825 PTS in scoreboard

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2 (COEFFICIENT OF DIFFICULTY 50 – MISSION EXTREME) :

1CC NO MISS + STAGE 1 WITH AT LEAST 60.000 PTS + 25 STARS + 1UP X 3 + 81.560 PTS X 20.
AH! AH! AH! This is almost a joke. But we want be serious. We think this Target really is unreachable in K7, although it’s possible in theory (ARCADIA's top score has completed this mission). Only a complete View Point Master would be able to reach this incredible target. If you can do this you'll obtain a special ticket directly on to ROUND 3 of K7 because you win 1250 bonus pts!
+ 1250 PTS in scoreboard

The count of bonus points for a player will be taken from their final replay submission for Phase 2! This means that if you submit an early replay that meets a special target but the final replay you submit doesn’t meet the special target, you will not receive bonus points for the special target! Part of the strategy of the special targets is that players will have to decide if it’s better for their leaderboard total to submit a lower scoring replay that reaches one or more special targets, or better to submit a higher scoring replay that reaches none or fewer special targets.

Considering the fact that just the last replay sent is valid for bonus, we will update the leaderboard chart to fully reflect bonus points after verifying replays on the break day at the end of each phase.

Examples:
- Player A reaches no special targets and finishes in 75th place = 5 pts
- Player B reaches no special targets and finishes in 37th place = 5 pts
- Player C reaches no special targets and finishes in 30th place = 40 pts
- Player D reaches special target A and finishes in 19th place = 50 + 95 = 145 pts
- Player E reaches special target B and finishes in 15th place = 150 + 115 = 265 pts
- Player F reaches special target C and finishes in 13th place = 150 + 125 = 275 pts
- Player G reaches special targets A and C and finishes in 21st place = 50 + 150 + 85 = 285 pts
- Player H reaches special target D and finishes in 12th place = 175 + 135 = 305 pts
- Player I reaches no special targets and finishes in 2nd place = 350 pts
- Player J reaches special targets A, B, C and D and finishes in 16th place = 50 + 150 + 150 + 175 + 110 = 635 pts
- Player K reaches the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2 while finishing in 1st place = 1250 + 400 = 1650 pts

Just a quick question, what is 81.560? What does it mean to get 20 of them?

Wow. I just watched mickey@jvrm.net 355680 inp, it's basically a single-ship score; he dies once, gets stripped of the satellites and barrier, and the game whoops his ass four times in a wink.
And he ends first stage which appears to be played with full confidence well below 61K.

Well, the good news is that I can play this one as well in Wolf106 under Wine - I should be able to do a bit better than I did with Golden Axe

Here's my understanding. As Ghemant says, each consecutive star collected is worth an increasing amount of points, up to a max of 81,560 per star. The values restart if you die. The values for consecutive stars are, I believe, 500, 1000, 3310, 5000, 10000, 33100, 50000, 81560. So to get even 1x81560 you need to collect 8 stars without dying. To get 20x81560 you'd need to collect 27 stars without dying. The Arcadia auto-fire record of 30x81560 would have collected 37 stars without dying.

How are we supposed to get all the nozo without auto? ; D bombs only go so far.

The arcadia record doesn't achieve mission impossible 2. The arcadia record holder suicided many times to achieve the score (you should know.... :D).

there is a possibility for playback issues with viewpoint because there are different versions of the viewpoint rom from 106 to current. the current (127) rom when played with mame106 will say

this doesn't directly appear to be an issue but the judges may need to test for both roms and force one rom to be used.

In this game all players start from "0" (except Sikraiken that have a little experience). This is a game full of secrets and strategies. You must find if you want Targets !

I had a 231k score up on MARP years ago but deleted it.

I hate this game.

I'll be dismantling this game and breaking everything down stage by stage. Give me the next couple days and I'll post a page about everything I know (feel free to contribute! :D ).

I love games with secrets. I found 2 stars, it's cool discover these things without see inps. I wanna have fun, and seeing inps you lose a lot of fun that is discover the secrets by yourself. I'll worry about score later.

One bad thing: This ship is sooooo slow, I wanna a "S" powerup :(

1) I know we need the bios but how do I know I have it?
2) I seem to be able to get into the F2 menu, does that mean I have the correct bios?
3) I can't seem to set it as xtra life 50000-80000pts. I can only set 30000-80000 or 50000-1000?

Please help.
