KNOCK OUT 7TH EDITION (2008) BBH (USA)

Like every year the rules of the contest are rebuilt and we hope the addictions can increase the interest in participation to this wonderful competition. The Knock Out 8th edition will start at 4th of October, h. 20.00 GMT.

GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION:

1. In order to enter K8, it is sufficient to send your inps to MARP with the subscription “K8” after the start of the championship; in every case, we will open a topic on the forum entitled “K8 list of players”, in which every player can announce (not forced, but pleasant) his partecipation, showing the country that s/he comes from. Of course, for new players at MARP, it’s better to try some inp’s submissions before the beginning.

2. For this tournament, we will only accept WolfMAME Plus 0.106. Other versions of WolfMAME will be permitted and indicated by the Coordinators only in the event that a game is discovered to have severe emulation/playback problems.

3. When submitting, please be sure to include the .wlf file along with the .inp file.

4. It is strongly encouraged to use the game's shortname as the filename when you submit your .inp/.wlf file. Long filenames can be a hassle for confirmers.

5. As is the case with regular MARP rules, only one credit is allowed. No continuing, and no starting a 2nd game after your 1st credit.

6. Recordings must be submitted within 48 hours of creation, except for the last day of competition on a round, anything submitted on the last day must be uploaded within 24 hours of playing.

7. Unless otherwise noted, all games are to be played on the default settings. If you're not sure your settings are default, delete the game's corresponding .cfg file from the cfg directory. Although they are usually accepted at MARP, recordings on "harder" settings will not be permitted for this tournament. If the game uses a bios file, please make sure that it too is set to "default", playing on a different bios can lead to playback problems and sometimes results in changes to gameplay as well. Neo Geo games have exception: use Japan MVS3 bios only.

8. Final time before which a recording must be submitted to MARP is 19:59 GMT on the corresponding day. If MARP is down for an extended period of time, we will accept submissions via forum attachments on the thread for that week's game. Please do not submit recordings to the forum if MARP is not down.

9. There is no limit to the number of times you may submit on a game, as long as your new recording is a higher score than the previous recording. Regular uploading of scores is strongly encouraged since it makes for more interesting competition.

10. Average recorded speed must be 95% or higher. Use frameskip if you must.

11. If none of the three tournament coordinators can play back your recording, then your score will not be accepted. To help ensure that your recordings will work, please make sure that you delete/disable your nvram directory, and in the case of Neo-Geo games, delete/disable your memcard directory as well.

THE FORMAT

1ST ROUND: MASSIVE ELIMINATION ROUND 4th october 20.00 GMT ~ 11th october 19.59 GMT (24h pause), 12th ~ 19th october (24h pause), 20th ~ 27th october (24h pause)

The first round will be composed by 3 games. The championship begins with one elimination round who goes on for 24 days, one game for 7 days with a 24-hours period separating each game. The games will be announced 4th october, 12th october and 20th october. Players do not necessarily have to enter the championships on the first week, it’s possible to join the championships also from 2nd game (of course having few chances to go on !). That’s a great idea because it permits to a big number of players to compete against for a good period of time. For each game there will be a classification, with the following point system:

Position 01 -> 400 pts *** Position 17 -> 95 pts
Position 02 -> 350 pts *** Position 18 -> 90 pts
Position 03 -> 300 pts *** Position 19 -> 85 pts
Position 04 -> 270 pts *** Position 20 -> 80 pts
Position 05 -> 240 pts *** Position 21 -> 75 pts
Position 06 -> 220 pts *** Position 22 -> 70 pts
Position 07 -> 200 pts *** Position 23 -> 65 pts
Position 08 -> 185 pts *** Position 24 -> 60 pts
Position 09 -> 170 pts *** Position 25 -> 55 pts
Position 10 -> 155 pts *** Position 26 -> 50 pts
Position 11 -> 140 pts *** Position 27 -> 45 pts
Position 12 -> 130 pts *** Position 28 -> 40 pts
Position 13 -> 120 pts *** Position 29 -> 35 pts
Position 14 -> 110 pts *** Position 30 -> 30 pts
Position 15 -> 105 pts *** Position 31 -> 25 pts
Position 16 -> 100 pts *** Position 32 -> 20 pts

From 33 th place every player have 5 points.

The top 32 players of round 1 go to round 2. The others go home.

In case of tie will pass the turn the player who has higher position in the two games (exemple: 2 players have 80 pts; one has got two times 3rd position, the other has got one time 1st position then other lower positions. The second player, who has 1st position, pass the turn).

2ND ROUND: 7 days (32 PLAYERS) ONE ON ONE. 16 vs 16. 28th october ~ 4th november (24h pause).
The seeding will be determined so: 1st vs 32th, 8th vs 25th etc. Winner moves on, loser goes home!

See this image to understand well (K8 structure):

Image

3RD ROUND: 7 days (16 PLAYERS) ONE ON ONE. 8 vs 8. 5th november ~ 12th november (24h pause).

4TH ROUND: 7 days (08 PLAYERS) QUARTER FINAL. 4 vs 4. 13th november ~ 20th november (24h pause).

5TH ROUND: 7 days (04 PLAYERS) HALF FINAL. 2 vs 2. 21th november ~ 28th november (24h pause).

6TH ROUND: 7 days (02 PLAYERS) THE FINAL. 1 vs 1. 29th novmeber ~ 6th december.

Could I do a suggestion, please?
Would it be possible to increase the number of games (1 or 2 more) in 1ST ROUND?
If more than 30-40 players enter the tournament this proposal would do more exciting the competition and it would be more chances to show the ability and potential of each player, so to survive fairly :^o :-" .
Furthermore, it would help to decrease the "luck factor".
I know it's a suddenly idea but... ¿is it possible to be considered?

yeah multiple games in the first round makes a lot of sense, I think this happened in previous knockouts? So the tournament doesn't start with all the players who don't suck at one game.

I can add (if needed) 1 game in first Round, but depend from number of players.

One concern I have: What if WolfMAME .106+ won't work with the latest version of the game being used for that week?

Yeah I would agree with Chad and have three qualifying games... or if there happens to be 48+ players, then you could do two qualifying games, top 48 move on, and the top 16 get a bye into the round of 32... or if there are 64+ players, then it would be a 64 player knockout format. But I'm personally pretty easy to get along with anyway, because I know I'm not going to win. :)

Still... if there happens to be 64 players... March Madness, anybody? :) I'll fill out a bracket! :)

Just a note, system11.org is running their STGT (Shooting Game Tournament), which started August 23 and ends on October 4th. If the start date would be pushed back a week until then, it's possible we could get a large number of people to join K8 from there.

STGT is a shmup tournament played through MAME, so people would be able to switch over very easily. The tournament has 238 participants split into teams of 5-7. I believe a blurb there would provide greatly increased participation and is a worthwhile consideration.

From shmups.com usually there are few users interested in Marp's tournament. I remember Sikraiken, BBH and Pat33999 only in this case. Other users in that site are not interested in multi genre tournament.

And there is a big difference between Knock Out and Shooting Game Tournament in shmups.com. Here, wolfmame replay is compulsory, in shmups.com no proof is require. I think that if wolfmame replay were compulsory in shmups, total numbers of players to decrease in 50 or less.

Inform all concerned that there has been a change of the date of commencement of the tournament.

It 'been moved to October 4th.

Also added a third game in the first phase, in which everyone can participate.

Can we upload zipped inps to the forum in the case we already have scores uploaded to MARP previously, to save the hassle of removing, and possibly restoring older replays?
