Pirate Pete needs special rule

Post by Zhorik » Thu Jun 09, 2005 3:10 am

Pirate Pete (rom piratpet) has a "level select" feature that I'm sure is a debugging relic that was not in the real game. If you press up and button 2 (Alt-Up on keyboard), you can cycle through the 4 sections of the game.

Until recently, the game had some big bugs. First you always died at the start of the 4th section. Then, if you "finished" the 4th section and touched the girl you needed to rescue, you died instead of rescuing her, making it impossible to finish the level. These are fixed as of .97.

Now that the game seems to be fixed and appears to be completely playable and suitable for real competition, in my opinion the "level select" should be banned. To see an example of the level select, watch my old recording, or diabolik's recording. If its allowed you can use it to skip sections, jump to the sections that have the most points and play them again and again, or even jump out of situations where you are about to die.

"Congratulations. I love you". Such a funny retro-feel game :)

Yes, it seems that "level select" is left or forgotten there for testing purposes and shouldn't be ingame at all. By using it you can avoid levels you don't like. It works in middle of levels too. Those recordings that use level select are subject to deletion, naturally. Sorry Diabolik.
This game has only one button for jump (picture), same should apply for mame.

Any editor feel free edit special rules for Pirate Pete, and zero Diabolik's score of 21 000.
Special rules:

Code: Select all

Use of "level select cheat"(player 1 button 2) is NOT allowed.

i was holding off until we had a status of all recordings, since most of them have level select but i'm sure some of them (the lower scoring ones) don't.

I just watched all of the recordings. Only diabolik's definitely uses level select. The recordings of Ray Atkinson and fazetwit both somehow skip from stage 4 back to stage 1 after a death, but I can't tell if they used level select to skip forward or if this was just a glitch in the game (very possible). All of the other recordings definitely do not use the level select.

Diabolik's 18K recording used the level select also. I also have a couple of old recordings that used level select (before end of level bug was fixed it was the only way to keep playing). My current 23K recording does not use it.
