2011 Time Trials - Round 3 - Joust
The third game is going old school with Joust. I don't think this has been in any tournament... save John Cunningham's Golden Era Game Of The Week in March of 2004.
I don't think there's much to be said about this popular game except the rules... so I'm just going to say straight time trial, with clock starting when the first monster begins to come into play (basically a platform turning white), and the clock stopping at the first frame where the text "wave ##" OR "survival points awarded" (whichever comes first) appears. USE DEFAULT SETTINGS, which is different than the MARP rules, so just press F2 to move onto the next screen. There obviously won't be any marathoning here. Qualification is from 3 to 20 stages, and that's all that needs to be said about that.

Woo-hoo! Finally, a classic era game!
Re: 2011 Time Trials - Round 3 - Joust
I knew this day had to come...
I feared it...
Now I have reason to really have fear. I've tried this game for the first time some hours ago, it's HARD for my poor hands.
let's hope in good luck

Here's a file that could greatly help in your jousting endeavors, especially getting through stage 8 where you have to deal with a Pterodactyl:

Re: 2011 Time Trials - Round 3 - Joust
A little bit difficult to control the main character. I will practice and later I´ll send my inp.
Long life to good games
Re: 2011 Time Trials - Round 3 - Joust
20 stages? This match is only a trial, I think, in every meant of the term. :/

Re: 2011 Time Trials - Round 3 - Joust
I have tried to put the game in default settings but I don't know if I have proceed correctly.gameboy9 wrote: USE DEFAULT SETTINGS, which is different than the MARP rules, so just press F2 to move onto the next screen.
Before pressing F2 I saw the initial settings. Difficulty was advanced. Is this correct?
Later, I pressed F2 several times and a new screen containing paremeters of the game appeared.
In that screen I could see:
number of lives --> 5
extra life --> each 20.000 point
difficulty level --> 5 (decrease or increase 1 by 1)
...
restore default (or something similar) NO
I remenber I put restore default to YES but I didn't see any differences. Perhaps I did something wrong...
The difficulty level was the same (5 --> Advanced).
Can you put a screenshot related to the difficulty level and other settings, please?
Or a mini guide step by step to get the desired configuration?
Re: 2011 Time Trials - Round 3 - Joust
@Innuendo: Yeah, it definitely takes some practice to control the character. Reminds me of controlling Mario from SMB1 in the air... you really couldn't do it very well.
@Chronos: I'm not sure what you're trying to say, but I figured that 10 stages was going to be too short (remember I was aiming for a 20 minute time trial), 20 stages was going to be short, but a lot more acceptable... more toward 12 minutes... and 30 stages was going to be too many to make a point, so I went with 20.
@el_fumador: All you have to do is when you see "factory settings restored" or something like that, just press F2 one time, insert your coin, and away you go. Defaults should be diff. level 5, extra life every 20K.
I think you'll be surprised of how far you can get... I never thought I was going to get to stage 12 in this game...

Re: 2011 Time Trials - Round 3 - Joust
As long as you don't have NVRAM enabled (which I don't think WolfMAME 106 even allows), the Williams games of this era (Joust, Stargate, Robotron, etc) will all be at factory default at every start up. As to playing, I haven't had much luck so far. Haven't gotten to the 2nd egg wave yet (wave 10), but it must be my laptop keys. I can usually get in the mid 20's on a real machine. Gonna have to try hooking it up to my MAME cab and see if I do any better
Re: 2011 Time Trials - Round 3 - Joust
Corrected the ending point to say that "wave ##" OR "survival points awarded" will be the first frame a "wave ends". That basically makes it easier for me to confirm the recording.

Re: 2011 Time Trials - Round 3 - Joust
Only one submission until now, this makes me think I'm not the only one facing incredible difficulties with this game. I merely reach level 8
Re: 2011 Time Trials - Round 3 - Joust
Yeah sometimes I have a decent game and reach level 10... and sometimes I just fall flat and die at level 7. Or I just end the game after losing three lives in a level for no reason. I might have made it too difficult by saying game over after wave 20...

Re: 2011 Time Trials - Round 3 - Joust
This game is not common. It is no so easy when you play it. I´m dying on stage 5. I´ll send a inp tonight or tomorrow. Maybe, I won´t have free time in friday, saturday and sunday.
Long life to good games
Re: 2011 Time Trials - Round 3 - Joust
@TheBSM: Take away about 120 frames... it's easier to confirm when I can see "no survival points awarded" instead of waiting two seconds to figure out which frame "wave 13" shows up.
@All: I tell you what... I sometimes think that I have the AI all figured out all to find that it's not figured out.
