Why not just require the use of ONLY the versions provided for download on this site? Obviously, anyone submitting to this site has the ability to download from here as well. Provide a commandline, mame32 and an o/x version, and problem is solved. I think we all deserve to play/compete on a level playing field, which this solution does provide.

Issues for me are bandwidth and not having a Mac to do an actual Mac version on. That and I don't really want to do 23857234 different versions just to keep everybody happy. Just don't have the time or inclination.

While I can completely understand your thoughts and reasoning, I definitely would agree with a standard WolfMame32 version and the normal command line version... and the reason behind this is just to make it slightly easier for verification purposes. I did try the frontend, and it was nice, but the simplicity of an official 32 version worked nicely. [That and if someone makes their own build version, then could there be problems with verification if the build has an anomaly?]

I thought it was a nice touch to keep everything nice and pure by removing the Plus additive. Sure there was a lot of nice extras with that build, but most of the stuff ended up in the normal MAME anyways.

But in the end, it's all up to you and I respect your wishes and thoughts.

To me, it seems silly to maintain more than one Windows binary, so I use just the official source, as that's what I use, and so that I don't have to wait for any other version, such as MAME32 or MAME Plus, before I start work. Also, as of 0.114, all the WolfMAME source is patched to only the MAME core, there are no changes to OSD code now, so patches to other MAME ports should be really easy now.

I still don't get this apparent aversion to using any frontend whatsoever other than MAME32, there must certainly be better UIs out there.

barry, have you approached Brad Oliver about him adding the "wolf" stuff to macmame?

although I just checked the macmame site and it seems the last version by Brad was released in Jan 2006...0.103.

it might be where he isn't working on it anymore.

my mac is too old...so I can't use modern OS and dev tools or I would make a wolfmacmame build myself.

It looks like from the macmame "community" forums that Dave Dribin has taken over making modern cocoa builds of macmame. His last release was 0.114. Maybe he would be interested in adding the "wolf" to his build.

Odds are you still would have the cross-platform playbackability issues...but you would know at least the wolf stuff is in any submissions using wolfmacmame.

Looking a bit more at the forums, it seems a couple have compiled SDLMAME on macs as well.

I believe that since MAME32 has been around the longest, it's the most comfortable and userfriendly [in most cases.. though I can't speak for the ignorant morons who can't add 1+1 and then post to the MAME forums and complain] and has what people are looking for. The little loader you made was nice, but I found the sparseness kind of.. well.. blah... I actually started wishing there was a color pallette option.. and then missing the history option.

Honestly, Plus version or not, I don't care. I'm just old fashioned enough to have liked the GUI version that has been implemented since Alphamame. And I'm usre I'm not the only one either... though I can understand the frustration in waiting a day or 2 longer for it.. but for a lot of people, I'd dare say the wait would be worth it.

SDLMAME is designed more specifically for Linux and OS X.

I haven't heard of MacMAME being updated for a while now, although I do know of a different port called MAME OS X that is updated.

I don't know if it's the 'frontend' or not, but since 112/113, mame crashed on exit, but with 114, it crashes on start, before the game even loads. Kelly has hit the nail on the head, as MAME32 gives the settings at a glance, as well as easy to change options, which greatly simplifies the mame experience. The extras are also nice(though the plus versions were best). If bandwidth is the main issue, why not put the files on yahoo groups, and just link to it off site? Yahoo groups recently increased the files section for individual groups to 100M. This could take some of the load off the site.

By bandwidth, I mean my own, Seymour hosts the binaries for free.

Also, since about 0.112, MAME will crash on exit if you set nvram_directory to NUL. It may also happen with other folder options as well. This is a MAME issue, I'd suspect that the exact same thing would happen with MAME32. MMF gets around that by using a temporary folder for nvram and diff.
