K7 - Round 1 - Part 3 - Tumble Pop (tumblep)

Post by GHEMANT »

ROUND 1 «PHASE 3» Tumble Pop "tumblep" (Deco) 1991

Target Score: TOP 36 overall from ROUND 1 move on to ROUND 2 (according to KnockOut 7’s rules you must be in the top 36 at the end of Phase 3 of Round 1 based on total leaderboard points earned from Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3 of Round 1).

Duration of round: October 9th 2008 20:00 GMT – October 18th 2008 19:59 GMT [9 DAYS PLAY]

TIME REMAINING

GENRE: PLATFORM

Since in each of the three phases of play of ROUND 1 there are special targets to reach, we decided to extend the duration of the competition for each of the first three phases by two days to give the players the ability to better study the selected games. The duration of later ROUNDS will be seven days.

Place in your ROMS folder: tumblep (parent rom). Note that on Tumble Pop there aren't any differences between the World and Japanese romsets.

Excellent, the fight continues!
This is the last game of round 1. This is a platform game rather well known, not really hard, but very long. Except for the Bosses, the game has 9 stages on each world, which means 81 different stages, but only 66 are playable during the same game, because the number of stages gradually increases after the end of each world in the following manner: 4-5-6-7-8-9-9-9-9. Tumble Pop is a very nice platform game, dynamic and full of colours, and with plenty of hidden bonuses to discover. If your ranking is very low in the leaderboard you can still hope to climb up by hunting for some of the extra target bounties available.

The history of the popularity of Tumble Pop

Tumble Pop’s genesis derives from the big success of Snow Brothers, released one year earlier. This game belongs to a genre of platform games with fixed screens. The game’s graphics are very colourful and with plenty of details. Some characters are based on previous games from Data East. The gameplay is immediate and the difficulty is balanced. Tumble Pop is definitely a nice arcade game that collected plenty of coins in its age, but not so much to justify a home conversion, except a bad port for the Gameboy.

REMEMBER – This is the last game of Round 1, so if you stink at this game, suck it up and practice harder since this is your last chance!

SPECIAL TARGETS LIST :
The main news about this edition of the Knockout is the special targets to reach. These targets have been proposed to push players to reach their best performances and to let them find the most hidden parts of the games. The targets, if reached, allow players to add bonus points to their leaderboard point total for the Phase.

Remember that the first 6 gamers at the top of the leaderboard chart based on total points after the 3 phases of ROUND 1 will skip the 1-on-1 ROUND 2 and advance directly to the calmer ROUND 3. We expect that reaching the special targets listed below will be essential to reaching one of these 6 privileged positions. While allowing the top 6 players from ROUND 1 to skip ROUND 2 will probably deprive ROUND 2 of some of the best players, it also allows those players to avoid the sometimes frustrating and random matchups of ROUND 2. The targets highlighted in red are of extreme difficulty and we think it’s unlikely that anybody will reach them during K7. They are performances that would be difficult to reach even with much more time than the 9 days given for each Phase of ROUND 1 (or at least that’s what we thought before you guys tore apart View Point). Regardless, we want to push players to their limits, and we expect these special targets to do that. Each target is characterized by a coefficient of difficulty (1 coefficient point = 25 bonus points for the score board).

IMPORTANT : If you reach one or more targets, write it in the comment of your replay, two examples: "K7 TARGET A" or "K7 TARGET B+D". It’s possible to perform multiple targets in the same replay. If you reached all of the normal targets in the same replay, you’d add 450 bonus points to your scoreboard total (A+B+C+D+E = 25pts + 50pts + 75pts + 125pts + 175pts = total 450pts). Target E is worth 175 additional points on top of the 75 from Target C. The red “MISSION IMPOSSIBLE” bonus target cannot be combined with bonuses from the normal targets. If you reach the Mission Impossible target, you get only the points from that target and do not also get the points from the A,B,C... targets.

TARGET A) (COEFFICIENT OF DIFFICULTY 1) :

FINISH STAGE 1 WITH AT LEAST 10.000 PTS +.
Very easy, finish stage 1 with at least 10.000 points. If you reach this target you obtain a little extra bonus:
+ 25 PTS in scoreboard

TARGET B) (COEFFICIENT OF DIFFICULTY 2) :

OBTAIN RAINBOW CRYSTAL X 7.
To obtain this target it's necessary to collect seven rainbow crystals that are worth 10.000 points each. To obtain them it's not necessary to complete the game. Note that it’s possible to take seven only starting from some stages. If you reach this target you obtain an extra bonus:
+ 50 PTS in scoreboard

TARGET C) (COEFFICIENT OF DIFFICULTY 3) :

1CC.
If you finish the game you obtain an extra bonus:
+ 75 PTS in scoreboard

TARGET D) (COEFFICIENT OF DIFFICULTY 5) :

OBTAIN 1up X 7.
Very hard target because there are only a few stages you can start from and get 7x1up during the same game. What’s more, it’s necessary to choose the right bonus letters at roulette. Oh, and it’s only possible if you reach World 9. If you obtain this difficult target you’ll earn a good extra bonus:
+ 125 PTS in scoreboard

Here’s what the 1up look like : Image

TARGET E) (COEFFICIENT OF DIFFICULTY 10) :

1CC NO MISS.
Finish the game without losing any lives. If you obtain this target you’re rewarded with a very good extra bonus:
+ 75 PTS + 175 PTS = 250 PTS in scoreboard

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE (COEFFICIENT OF DIFFICULTY 30 – MISSION EXTREME) :

1CC NO MISS + STAGE 1>=10.000 PTS + OBTAIN RAINBOW CRYSTAL X 7 + 1up X 7 + score greater than 1.400.000.
UH! UH! UH! Once again this is almost a Joke (but we said that on View Point about Mission Impossible 2, so what do we know). Let’s be serious. This Target is possible but you have to find a particular secret in the game. Right now, no one we know of on MARP understands how to get this secret. It’s possible to get all the items for this target without losing any lives (ARCADIA's top score has probably obtained this target). If you do this you obtain an immense extra bonus:
+ 750 PTS in scoreboard

Here’s what the RAINBOW CRYSTALS look like : Image

The count of bonus points for a player will be taken from their final replay submission for Phase 3! This means that if you submit an early replay that meets a special target but the final replay you submit doesn’t meet the special target, you will not receive bonus points for the special target! Part of the strategy of the special targets is that players will have to decide if it’s better for their leaderboard total to submit a lower scoring replay that reaches one or more special targets, or better to submit a higher scoring replay that reaches none or fewer special targets.

Considering the fact that just the last replay sent is valid for bonuses, we will update the leaderboard chart to fully reflect bonus points after verifying replays on the break day at the end of each phase.

Examples:
- Player A reaches no special targets and finishes in 75th place = 5 pts
- Player B reaches no special targets and finishes in 37th place = 5 pts
- Player C reaches no special targets and finishes in 30th place = 40 pts
- Player D reaches special target A and finishes in 19th place = 25 + 95 = 120 pts
- Player E reaches special target B and finishes in 15th place = 50 + 115 = 165 pts
- Player F reaches special target C and finishes in 13th place = 75 + 125 = 200 pts
- Player G reaches special targets A and C and finishes in 21st place = 25 + 75 + 85 = 185 pts
- Player H reaches special target D and finishes in 12th place = 125 + 135 = 260 pts
- Player I reaches no special targets and finishes in 2nd place = 350 pts
- Player J reaches special targets A, B, C and D and finishes in 16th place = 25 + 50 + 75 + 125 + 110 = 385 pts
- Player K reaches the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE while finishing in 1st place = 750 + 400 = 1150 pts

Hey,

There's a mistake in the leaderboard link (the filter must be tumblep, not tumplep).

Glad I can be lazy this round. Just in time too since it's exam week.

Target A is about finishing Stage 1 with 10.000 points, not World 1? If then, Dark Kariya's recording doesn't achieve this...

"Stage" is a single screen of a group of stages in a World. Exemple:

stage 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4 are 4 stages of World 1.

Yes, I am impressed with the choice of games too. It seems that games have been very thoughtfully chosen, and the previous MARP high score on all of the chosen games so far (from part 1 and 2 of round 1 at least), could be improved upon - and indeed has been - thanks to the skill of the gamers taking part.

Strange... But it don't make difference in this case :)

This game is strange, I can't do a big score in little time like the other players :(
